How to Tell If You're Losing Muscle on a GLP-1 (and What to Measure)

The number on the scale is falling, which is exactly what you hoped for when you started a GLP-1 like semaglutide or tirzepatide. But a lower number doesn't tell you what kind of weight is leaving. Some of it is fat. Some of it is muscle. And unless you're measuring, you have no way to see the difference — you just watch the total drop and assume it's all going the right way. The problem most people run into isn't losing weight on a GLP-1. It's losing the wrong weight without ever knowing it happened.
This matters because muscle is hard to build back and easy to shed during any rapid weight loss. Weight loss on a GLP-1 is not all fat
When you lose weight quickly, part of what comes off is lean body mass — the muscle, connective tissue, and water that make up everything that isn't fat. The most reliable picture comes from measuring the same way, repeatedly.
